Ready.Set. Write! Update

The first week of Ready.Set.Write! is done, and it's time for me to admit how that first week went.

For anyone who doesn't know, Ready.Set.Write! is a summer writing intensive sponsored by AlisonKatyErinElodie, and Jaime which allows us to cheer each other on as we battle to meet our writing goals. Go ahead and take a peek at the details here and feel free to join in on the fun.

Here's this week's update:

How I did on last week's goals. . .

"wrap up those last revisions on my middle grade manuscript"

That was my goal, and it doesn't look like I made it. But I'm close, and in my defense, I got my first beta notes back on some of it and decided to make some changes right away because there's a couple of things which will influence the last part of my revisions.

My goal(s) for this week. . .

Same as last week. Get that MS out the door...but this time a little more improved than before.

A favorite line from my story OR one word/phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised. . .

"Hey! I asked you guys something," Daniel called, but Ernie and Tyra marched on ignoring him like he was nothing more than an irritating fruit fly. "Fine!" He plopped onto the ground and crossed his arms over his chest. A soggy coldness crept through the leaves, making his butt chilly and wet. He refused to shiver. "I'm not going anywhere until one of you talks to me."
"Ouch!" A pebble pelted his forehead.
"Move it along, Bim." Ernie grinned a few yards ahead, tossing another small stone up and down in his hand. "Or you'll have less respectable creatures to pout with than us."

The biggest challenge I faced this week. . .

Time. Plain and simple. There's simply too much nonsense popping up in daily life, making writing almost impossible.

Something I love about my WIP. . .

The characters. Each and every change seems to bring them more to life and add a side to their personalities I didn't know existed before. It's just fun to watch the clarity that revisions/rewrites bring.

That's it for this week! See what the next week brings.

  1. Keep revising! And squash the nonsense. Unless it's your kids. Don't squash them.

  3. Fun excerpt! I feels it. ^_^
Down with nonsense! I know what you mean. Distractions are every-freaking-where!

  4. Hey, love Daniel's reaction in that part! THAT'S what I'm talkin' bout! I'm sure you're rockin' those revisions. :-D

  5. Love the excerpt! And it's amazing how much time gets in the way...yeouch. Best of luck with this week's goals!

  6. Love that excerpt! Thanks for sharing. I love reading about author's work and work weeks. I appreciate the honesty about distractions - we all have them. Best wishes this week!!

  7. Sometimes you have to go backward before you can go forward. That's just the way revisions work!

  8. Sometimes it's hard to meet a goal exactly (especially for ambitious people like us!) but it effeminately sounds like you've been getting a lot of work done. Keep it up!

  9. Love that snippet!

And I hear ya on the time issue. Always seems to be too little of it, and what's left tend to go to the not-so-fun things in life. Here's hoping you find plenty of time to hit your goals this week!

  10. Summer is tough! Stuff keeps popping up here, too, and I've gotten less done than I'd like. Keep at it!
    Great snippet!

  11. Yes on time being the biggest challenge. I'm struggling with that a lot lately too. I hope you can get your revisions wrapped up this week and that you'll magically find some extra minutes in your busy schedule for writing!

  12. Characters that show traits of their personality we didn't know when we started writing them are the must fun and interesting to write. Daily life nonsense, hmm, where have I seen that? Could it be world wide phenomena? Dragon Hugs!

  13. You were close, which is great. We all need extra time to polish our work. Good luck this week.

  14. It's all about time. Here's hoping you find more of it for writing!

  15. Always good to see characters growing, isn't it? ^_^ I'm seeing some of that in my WIP, though too often they get their moment in the sun before they disappear forever. I knew it would be like that from the start, but each time, it gets harder. Grr. Arg.
