What's Up Wednesday

Yay! It's Wednesday again, which means it's time for another session of What's Up Wednesday with Jaime Morrow and Erin L. Funk. These lovely ladies sponsor this hop to help us writerly folks keep in touch with each other. If you want to join in on the fun, go on and head over to their sites, get the deets and sign in on the linky. It's that simple!

And here's what's up with me. . .

1) What I'm Reading:

I read Perfect Princess by Meg Cabot as a type of research for one of my WIPs. Funny research? I was surprised at amount of information it had over historical princesses--okay, it wasn't necessarily all serious information, but still. Then I read Fear and Sunshine by Donovan Scherer. This is a MG series about a really cute girl, Sunshine, who happens to be the heir to the one and only monster factory. It's really cute with great illustrations.

I've started reading Bringing Up Mike by Mark Duncan. This is a YA/NA about a high schooler who builds an android to attend school for him. It's more of a deep novel, handling the questions of acceptance and fitting in. I'll let you know what I think.

2) What I'm Writing:

I missed Monday's Ready.Set.Write! end post, but I did hit my 10,000 words. I just wish they had been 'good' words. I wrote and cut and wrote and cut and wrote... well, you get the idea. Me and my story are at odds with each other at the moment.

3) What's Inspiring Me:

Yesterday and today, the online writer's conference 'WriteOnCon' is underway. This is the first year I can really take part (have the time), but it's also the 1st year I can't pitch. Bummer. I'm still having fun. It's fantastic to watch all the live events and has definitely been educational so far. If you haven't, check it out today (or later, since they keep everything recorded for later viewing). It's free and simply amazing.

4) What Else I've Been Up To:

Sorting cows. Treating pink-eye again (ugh!). Knitting Christmas scarves.

On a more irritating note (well, irritating for me - my kids find it fantastic), the schools have already started their fundraisers (it's only the 2nd week of school, guys!). I hate fundraisers, not because I mind doing things or helping people out, but begging relatives and friends to buy things is just. . .*sigh*  Yeah, it's out of my comfort zone. Big time. So I've been grinding my teeth and hoping noone will hate us as my kids call around.

Otherwise, things are kind of quiet. Amazing!

What's up with you? Read any good books lately? Beating your head against that concrete writing wall or are you frolicking in the fields of words? Find anything this last week that sent your writer heart fluttering? What are your favorite types of cookies (the chocolate deluxe macadamian nut ones in my kids' catalogue looks seriously addicting)?

  1. Ooh, that Fear and Sunshine book sounds really cute! I love that you are knitting Christmas scarves, that's such a wonderful thing to be working on. And yes, I totally agree with you about fundraising...there is nothing wrong with it in theory, but the reality is we are so bombarded with fundraising for everything all the time, it becomes tedious and if you're not a salesperson, it can be quite tricky to get people to help out!

    1. I think it's just having four kids all trying to sell stuff to the same people, which makes it really hard. It gets old fast.

  2. Bringing Up Mike sounds really interesting! I can't wait to hear what you think of it.

Words! I totally understand the being at odds. (I might with fighting with a story now.) You're working though and that's always good. I've been hanging around WriteOnCon, too! I didn't participate in the pitching, but I did see a couple of the live events LIVE for the first time! That was interesting. ^_^

Sorry about the pink eye again! You're heading into expert treating territory. ;)

Yeah, I remember fundraising. The second high school I went to actually gave us a percentage of cash back for our sales senior year! I got $160! I was lazy though. I asked about 2 relatives who would actually be offended if I didn't ask them, and then I just took it to church and stood there. We did cookie dough and donuts. Snickernoodle was my favorite! Also, my brother ate most of the donuts my parents bought. Including the one I had my name on. *grr...brothers*

    1. $160?! That's amazing! :) Churches are golden. And yeah, brothers can be a pain in that way ;)

  3. I forgot all about writeoncon! I've been really busy, and also have nothing to pitch. I am the organizer of fund raisers, and this year, I tried to think of things that were more community oriented because I know my kids keep bleeding, I mean selling, to the same small circle of family and friends.

    1. Oh. So YOUR'RE the evil person!!! Seriously, I don't envy you. The money is often needed and used well. It's a tough job.

  5. I'm having so much fun at WoC this year. It's my third time, but my first with the book I'm currently posting over there. Here's hoping I get some ninja interest :D

    Congrats on 10k!

  7. I hate fundraisers. I'd rather just write a big check than ask people to buy stuff. You know what our high school football team is selling this year as a fundraiser? Mattresses. Yeah, I really want to sleep on a mattress I bought from a fundraising company. Geesh.

What I've read recently: We Were Liars and The Islands at the End of the World. Both highly recommended.

What's inspiring me: This week, the view. But I'll have to share more on that next month. ;)

    1. Lol! Yeah, writing the check would be SO much better. And who in the world came up with the mattress idea? That's ridiculous.

      ooo...now, I'm wondering what's inspiring you.
