Celebrate the Small Things

This weekly blog hop is sponsored by the amazing Lexa Cain,  and co-hosted by L.G. Keltner from Writing Off the Edge and myself.

What exactly are we celebrating?

Every week, wonderful things happen, tiny things, which make us smile. But as time grabs us up, we forget all about these moments as if they never existed at all. This is the chance for us to reflect back on those and remember that there are tons of things worth celebrating.

(As most of you know, Lexa has been missing due to health issues. Unfortunately, I have not heard anything from her, and hope/pray she is doing fine as well.)

This week, I'm celebrating. . .

1) Bats! We have tree bats, barn bats, cave bats. Bats...bats...bats. Usually, I don't pay much attention to them because they have little to do with our 'daily' lives. But the other evening, I was sitting on the deck and noticed them flying around and decided just to watch them for awhile. I think I have a new, nightly hobby. . .of course, doing this with a glass of my hubs' plum wine.

2) Kayaking! My oldest gave me a kajak as a Mom's day present late Spring, but he did it right before the kids got out of school. So I haven't been able to head out with my future kajaking partner (my brother), since I don't really have a baby-sitter. This last weekend marked the first big kajaking trip (4 hours). We borrowed a canoe for my husband and the two younger kids, while I headed out on my kajak to lake Bull Shoals. It was not only great to paddle around, but the kids found some fun swimming areas (great rocks to jump off of too!). We rounded it off with a nice dinner at a nearby restaurant and called it a vacation day.

What about you? What put a smile on your face this last week? Catch a raindrop on your tongue? Find a quiet corner at the library? Enjoy a couple minutes of quiet time, which you didn't think you'd get?

What are you celebrating this week?

  2. Glad you finally got out on the water. Not sure I've ever seen live bats flying around. Except at Disney.

  3. Does your hubby make his own plum wine? That sounds delicious. I hope Lexa is doing okay as well.

  4. Wow, bats are creepy (although I shouldn't say that because I've only seen them on TV). And yes, Lexa. I keep stopping by her blog and hoping to see a new post. Hope she's just having timeout from blogging. We need a break now and then and she's been consistent for years up till now. X

  5. ACK! I forgot to write a post for this Friday. It's been a busy week with lots of annoyances and drama, so not sure I'd be able to figure something to celebrate.

  6. No bats, even in our barn, but we have a lot of barn swallows. I love watching them swoop around.

  7. I think bats are cute. ^_^ Plum wine, too?! Jealous. ^_^

Cheers to more fun kayaking trips! I've yet to get in one, but they look like tons of fun.

  8. Glad to hear your bats are doing well. I've heard that many populations in the south aren't thriving.

I love kayaking and try to get out at least once or twice a week.

  9. Bats are awesome. ^_^ As far as I know, we don't have any around here, which is unfortunate.

As for me, I'm celebrating the end of the blasted heat and lack of rain - nearly sixty days without rain! Which is a record for the Seattle area. But it finally got all cloudy and rained today. Such a relief.

  10. Tonja,

I don't like being in a small boat on the water. DH got me in a row boat while on our honeymoon and I haven't been the same since. lol Deep water has always terrified me, so putting a skittish gal in small boat on a lake with motorized boats casting huge wakes that only rippled toward our tiny vessel rocking it like crazy made this Cathy's claws dig deep in the side. I couldn't get out of that thing fast enough and vowed that I'd never get in anything like that again. Of course, I have no problem watching others enjoy sporting on the water leisurely or hit the white waters. In fact, it's a lot of fun seeing them on them and this summer I've gotten lucky to get a few pictures of them.

Bats are interesting but I had a bad experience with one as a kid. I don't know how old I was but I was too little to remember the details other than a bat somehow got tangled in my long hair. It got free but talk about panicked? I know bats are great for keeping mosquitoes down and for that I'm very thankful for. Heck, I'd even talked to DH about getting special bat houses to put in our trees years ago just so they'd stay near the house. We don't have a lot of trees anymore but we do have mosquitoes. If only we hadn't cut those trees down, huh? lol
